NEW DELHI: The Railway Ministry has clarified that one destination board on each side of a coach will be in Hindi and English while the next coach will have boards in Hindi and regional language pertaining to the originating station. The next coach will have boards in Hindi and the regional language of the terminating station. This order will be repeated in subsequent coaches, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee told the House on Wednesday. The controversy cropped up on May 17, when Braja Kishore Tripathy raised the issue on deletion of regional languages (except Tamil) from the destination boards in trains throughout the country by a circular issued by the Ministry. While clarifying the matter, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had said it was not possible to challenge the circular, as it was issued under an Act of Parliament. He, however, suggested that the matter could be discussed at a meeting with political leaders. Subsequently, the issue was discussed at a meeting on August 9 and another on Wednesday morning with the Speaker, where the Ministry furnished a factual note on the matter, based on which the final decision was taken.
