NEW DELHI: Top-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi prevailed over Varanya Vijuksanaboon of Thailand 6-4, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Wednesday. Rushmi got off to a lethargic start and trailed 1-4. However, she arrested the alarming trend with a flurry of forceful strokes that skidded off the fast court to a consistent spell of winners. Once she saved five breakpoints in a nerve-wracking sixth game in which deuce was called seven times, Rushmi was in control of the match, reeling off five games in a row to take the set. Into the second set, Rushmi went up 3-1 with an early break that proved handy. She could not serve out the match in the eighth game after breaking the Thai for the second time in the seventh, but Rushmi closed out the contest in the ninth game without any fuss. Rushmi takes on qualifier Kyung-Yee Chae of Korea who had beaten her in the second round last week. Isha Lakhani set up an intriguing quarterfinal against Ankita Bhambri as the two breezed past Parija Maloo and the National Games champion Parul Goswami respectively. While Tara Iyer stroked her way past the enthusiastic 14-year-old, Aishwarya Agrawal, for a quarterfinal berth against the 17-year-old Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand, her doubles partner Nungnadda Wannasuk enjoyed a stroke of luck with a direct entry into the semifinals. The stocky Nungnadda had tamed Sonal Phadke for a quarterfinal berth against compatriot Montinee Tangphong, but the second-seeded Tangphong pulled out of further competition with a back injury. The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Rushmi Chakravarthi bt Varanya Vijuksanaboon (Tha) 6-4, 6-3; Kyung-Yee Chae (Kor) bt Cassandra Barr (Aus) 6-1, 6-1; Isha Lakhani bt Parija Maloo 6-1, 6-2; Ankita Bhambri bt Parul Goswami 6-1, 6 -0. Varatchaya Wongteanchai (Tha) bt Sanaa Bhambri 6-2, 6-2; Tara Iyer bt Aishwarya Agrawal 6-2, 6-1; Nungnadda Wannasuk (Tha) bt Sonal Phadke 7-5, 6-0; Montinee Tangphong (Tha) bt Abby Hedges (Aus) 6-2, 6-0. Doubles (quarterfinals): Ankita Bhambri and Sanaa Bhambri bt Julia Goloborodko and Anastasiya Vasylyeva (Ukr) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; Sophia Mulsap and Varatchaya Wongteanchai (Tha) bt Anupama Rajur and Chirashanthi Rajur 6-1, 6-3.
