THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar said that State Government will constitute a sports commission next month to draft a sports policy which will be in tune with the times. He was speaking after inaugurating the one-day seminar on broad basing sports in Kerala and evolving a strategy conducted by the Kerala State Sports Council in connection with the National Sports Day celebrations here on Wednesday. The Minister said that the Government will make sports a part of school curriculum once the curriculum committees submits its report. He also said that necessary amendments would be made to the Kerala Sports Act 2000 passed by the previous LDF Government. The proposed commission will also be asked to study the present day Kerala sports scene and suggest remedies in a time-bound manner. The Sports Council president T.P. Dasan in his presidential address said that the Council will start centres of excellence in the State to train sportspersons in the State. He said the budget allocation for sports and games was miniscule and lack of funds was hampering the developmental activates of the KSSC. The speakers at the seminar were unanimous in their opinion for the need to introduce a sports culture and need to bring back children to the playgrounds. Dr. George Immanuel, Dr. K.J. Manoj and K.I. Manoj presented papers at the seminar. Prominent among others who spoke on the subject were the former volleyball international, S. Gopinath and the former KSSC president, V.G. Govindan Nair.
