Two held, spirit seized

Booked: The two persons arrested for transporting illegal spirit (seated) in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

Chitradurga: The Chitradurga police arrested two people and seized 840 litres of illegal spirit and a four-wheeler in a raid conducted near the office of the Sericulture Department here on Tuesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police H. Anjaneya told presspersons here on Wednesday that on a tip-off the police visited the spot and arrested two persons in a vehicle carrying 28 cans, each containing around 30 litres of spirit.

He said the market value of the seized vehicle and spirit was put at Rs. 4.84 lakh. Those arrested have been identified as Basavaraj (22) of Kudligi taluk in Bellary district and Nagaraj (45) of Challakere taluk in Bellary district, while Ranjeet, their associate is absconding.

Mr. Anjaneya did not rule out the possibility of a big bootlegging racket. He also said that the police would conduct an investigation to bust it.

A case has been registered at the Kote police station in this regard.
