Preliminary investigations so far indicate that besides Mr.Venkatesan, three persons, are involved in the case, a CB CID officer said. More details of the money collected and identification of property purchased from out of the misappropriated amount may be possible if the arrested person is taken into police custody. So far, the CB CID said, it had seized a car valued at Rs.30 lakh, two mobile phones and documents relating to purchase of land in Palakkad, Kerala. The allegation was that Mr. Venkatesan had cheated 24 persons to the tune of Rs.5.72 crore.

Initially, the Chennai City Central Crime Branch registered seven cases against Mr.Venkatesan. The cases were later transferred to the State Crime Branch CID.

In recent times, this is the third major case of alleged misappropriation to be investigated by the special unit, the earlier two being those related to Yobu Saravanan of Vellore and Anantharaj of Othiathur in Villupuram district, who had collected huge amounts of money promising to construct free houses for the poor.
