NEW DELHI: Olympian S. Suresh Kumar and the ‘best boxer’ of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, Som Bahadur Pun, scored impressive wins against the host, but otherwise Railways chugged ahead in other weight categories in the 54th National boxing championship here on Wednesday. Both Suresh and Pun made remarkable comebacks after having been out of the sport for over two years. Suresh of All India Police delivered the first dent to Railways’ pride when he defeated Bijender 36-14 in the 54kg category and made it to the final. The International Boxing Federation (AIBA) has made an exception only for India as the deadline of sending entries by name expired on Aug. 17. The IABF has to send the names by Friday to ensure India’s participation in the Chicago Worlds in October. Later in the day, Pun virtually toyed with Railways’ Vikas after having received a few blows in the first round in the 64kg semifinal. Pun pounded his typical upper cuts to perfection to rattle Vikas’ defence. Pun led 11-8 in the first and then improved it to 25-15 before taking 37-17 lead forcing the referee to stop the contest. A.L. Lakra stormed into the final with a 26-9 win over Pradeep of Maharashtra.
