Petroleum testing lab to be set up soon Inter-collegiate festival from September 12
PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) is trying to have tie ups with academic institutions in Thailand, the U.S. and Canada for exchange of expertise in areas such as nanotechnology, environmental engineering, material sciences and micro technology, according to college principal T.G. Palanivelu. He told reporters here on Thursday that the PEC had signed MoUs with TCS, Infosys, IGCAR in Kalpakkam and a German university. Mr. Palanivelu said the Chemical Engineering department of the college would start a Petroleum Testing Laboratory in six months. The laboratory was being set up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. The funds would be provided by the Civil Supplies Department, Government of Puducherry. The laboratory would be checking adulteration and also recommending the composition of various fuels, he added. The Government of Puducherry had also sanctioned an amount of Rs 40 lakh to network the 800-odd computers on the campus, he said. Future plans
Constructing a complex with several lecture halls by the next academic year was among the future plans of the PEC. One more hostel for men would also be constructed soon, Mr.Palanivelu said. Three more departments of the college — Electronics and Instrumentation, Mechanical and Electrical — had received recognition for PhDs and the college would be producing about 20 PhDs in 2007-08 academic year. K. Mahadevan, convener, Students Council of PEC, said the college would host an all India inter-collegiate cultural cum literary festival, PECOFES’07, from September 12 to 14. A light music show, fashion show and choreography were part of the event. Competitions such as clay modelling, quiz, ‘antakshari,’ crossword puzzles and extempore will be organised . Last year 1,700 students took part in the festival, he said, adding this year they expected around 2,000 participants.
