Concerted effort: A handful-of-rice programme at the Village International School, Thodupuzha.
A social awakening programme titled ‘A handful of rice, with a heart full of love’, intended to reach out to over 60 blind children, was launched at The Village International School, Thodupuzha. Under this, every child would bring a handful of rice three times a month and empty it in a special container kept in the school. This will be delivered to the Vocational Training Centre for the Visually Handicapped at Pothanicad. “We do not want this to be an effort where people contribute money, as it dilutes the essence of student involvement,” says Principal P.N. The Naval Children’s School won the first prize at the inter-school patriotic song competition organised by the Fort Kochi YMCA in connection with Independence Day. The St. Mary’s Anglo-Indian School, Fort Kochi, won the second prize and Fathima School the third prize. YMCA president Alex Daniel gave away the prizes. Social-science exhibition
The regional social-science exhibition of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chennai region, was inaugurated at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Port Trust. Fifty seven schools from the Chennai region participated in the programme. The State chosen for the year was Uttar Pradesh and the country Mauritius. Models of historical and geographic importance were displayed. Cultural programmes too were held. The students had an opportunity to interact with each other and know more about each others culture. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chennai region’s sub-regional football tournament was held in the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Cochin Port Trust. School principal Radha G. Krishnan welcomed the chief guest and the players. The tournament was inaugurated by A.R. Radhakrishnan, Sports officer, Cochin Port Trust. Thirteen teams from various Kendriya Vidyalayas participated in the tournament, which was conducted on a knock-out basis. K.V. Port Trust won the first semi-final, 3-0, played against K.V No.1 Naval Base. The team won the final match in tie-breaker, 10-9, against K.V. NAD, Aluva. The Hindu-NIE Team
