Charges framed against Mahanti

CUTTACK: Even as the Orissa Government framed charges against the suspended DGP B B Mahanti on Wednesday, the senior police officer remained underground for the last seven days.

Orissa and Rajasthan police searching for the elusive police officer, wanted in connection with a criminal case in Rajasthan, could not get any clue about him on Thursday.

Mahanti, against whom an NBW was issued by Rajasthan police for helping his rape convict son escape during parole is charged by the State Government for keeping the government dark about his visit to Rajasthan in November last year in connection with releasing his son on parole.

He is also accused of not cooperating with the State Government to honour a Rajasthan court order to pay an amount of Rs 50,000 that he had stood as surety while taking his son on parole.

The State Government also framed charges against the top cop for proceeding on unauthorised absence from his headquarters during his suspension period.

Mahanti was placed under suspension last Friday when the Rajasthan police requested the Cuttack district administration to execute the NBW against him.
