PIL on food in trains dismissed

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Accepting a slew of measures taken by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to improve the quality of food served aboard trains and cleanliness in the pantry cars, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a public interest litigation accusing IRCTC of supplying unhygienic food to the passengers.

In an affidavit, the Corporation informed the Court that it had deployed 58 quality control professionals having diploma/degree in hospitality with two years’ experience and that their number would be increased to 500.

These professionals would be deployed on a rotational basis and would have the power to supervise the catering services and the cleanliness of the kitchens. The Corporation had also engaged a private company to conduct food and cleanliness audit and public sector company RITES would grant ISO certification for the catering services after an assessment, the affidavit said.

Each train would have a passengers’ grievances redress system with 24-hour operational helpline numbers printed on them to enable the passengers to register their complaints, and the grievances would be addressed then and there by the quality control professional available there.

The trains would have menu stickers pasted on them and there would be a different menu for diabetes patients, the affidavit stated.
