Delhi University teachers queue up to elect new DUTA members in Delhi on Wednesday.
NEW DELHI: Candidate of Indian National Teachers’ Congress and Academics for Action and Development combine Aditya Narain Mishra has been elected Delhi University Teachers’ Association president for 2007-09. He polled 2,119 votes as compared with his nearest rival Amardeo Sharma of the Democratic Teachers’ Front who polled 1,413 votes. Major issues
The candidate fielded by BJP-backed National Democratic Teachers’ Front Avanigesh Awasthi got 1,054 votes. “It’s a victory for teachers. Through DUTA, we will highlight two major issues – the first is good and honourable Pay Commission recommendations and the second is expansion of higher education,” said an elated Mr. Mishra. Earlier on Wednesday morning, the Faculty of Arts building on the North Campus was teeming with teachers who had come to cast their votes. The main candidates for the president’s post stood at the entrance of the building making last-minute attempts to woo the teachers. Their supporters were seen moving around in the lawns. At the end of the day, Election Officer Sanjai Bhatt put the voter turnout at 70 per cent. For the first time, the University had set up a help desk. This time the authorities had also set up a special booth for differently-abled teachers near the entrance on the ground floor. “We thought now that we have so many disabled teachers, we should have a special arrangement for them. Earlier, we had to depute someone to collect their votes and put them in the ballot box. Now they can do everything on their own with dignity,” asserted Prof. Bhatt. Invalid
Of the 5,090 votes polled, 285 were declared invalid. The president along with 15 members of the DUTA Executive will now elect from among themselves other office-bearers: vice-president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer.
