Welfare steps “to bridge gap between rich, poor”

Staff Reporter

VANIYAMBADI: The State Goverment’s welfare measures are not meant to gain political mileage, but they meant to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, Public Works Department Durai Murugan said here on Thursday.

Participating at a function to distribute free gas stoves and colour television sets at the Islamiah College here, the Minister said that in matter of just 17 months Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had fulfilled all poll promises. “People polled in favour of the DMK during the 2006 elections because the election manifesto reached the grassroots level.”Karunanidhi was sincere to fulfil the pre-election promises. As a sign, the Chief Minister, immediately after assuming power, signed the file pertaining to distribution of one kg of rice for Rs.2. The next file he signed pertained to waiving of farmers’ loan.

He said that it was under the current regime that a majority of the people who had settled on ‘poromboke’ land got their house pattas. However, there were still some restrictions as pattas could not be given to people who had occupied the ‘eri poromboke’ area. In fact, the district stood second in distribution of house pattas. So far, 7,980 house pattas had been handed over to various beneficiaries. More 2,000 pattas were ready for distribution.

The welfare sops had no connection with the elections. For instance, the Chief Minister in his election manifesto promised to give colour television sets to those who did not have one and possessed ration cards.

He said that a total of 84,000 television sets had been distributed in the district, out of which 7,832 sets have been distributed at Vaniyambadi.

Further, the Minister assured to construct a bridge across the Palar connecting Periapettai with Old Vaniyambadi.

T. Venugopal, Tirupattur MLA, C. Gnanasekaran, Vellore MLA, R. Gandhi, Ranipet MLA, A.Sugandi, District Revenue Officer and Asish Kumar, Tirupattur Sub-Collector spoke.
