PUDUCHERRY: The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on Thursday called for fixing 10 p.m. as the closing time for arrack shops in the Union Territory. Deputy secretary of the PMK E. Vallathan said in a statement here that there had been a marked increase in the drinking habit among locals, and also among persons visiting the Union Territory owing to the round the clock sales. Law and order problems
Failure on the part of the police and the Government to arrest this trend had led to law and order problems and a spurt in crimes such as murder, dacoity, robbery and theft, he added. Persons belonging to the middle class and the unemployed youth were the worst hit. Pointing out that the bars in the Union Territory were closed at 10 p.m., the arrack shops also should wind up sales by that time, Mr. Vallathan said.
