AT PLAY: Collector T.N. Venkatesh with the special children in Tiruchi
KARUR: It was a unique and unforgettable day out for the 54 special children from the district.
Recently, the children — all differently-abled — paid a visit to Arivalayam at BHEL, near Tiruchi. The air was soon filled with mirth and fun as they enjoyed the huge water spread at Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) picnic spot. Accompanying them was Collector T.N. Venkatesh, who had arranged for the educational and recreational trip.
There are an estimated 1,722 special children — aurally, physically and mentally challenged — in the district. They are provided special education under the aegis of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan through trained teachers. Of them, 54 children aged between six and 18 were selected for the excursion to “learn and enjoy” life.
At Arivalayam, the children were exposed to making thread garlands, envelopes, stitching and tailoring, pickle and “appalam” making, which helped them to understand that there was life beyond physical and mental shortcomings. Overcoming the limitations was challenging, fortifying them with immense self-confidence, they said.
