Banarsi Das Gupta cremated

Bhiwani (Haryana): The mortal remains of veteran freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of Haryana, Banarsi Dass Gupta were consigned to flames with full State honour here on Thursday.

Mr. Gupta’s son Ajay Gupta lit the pyre of his father, who breathed his last at Maharaja Agarsen Hospital in Delhi late on Wednesday night where he had been under treatment since May 10 last.

Mr. Gupta, 90, is survived by a son and two daughters. He was given a state funeral in the evening. The State government declared a public holiday for the day and declared a three-day mourning. Born in 1917 in Bhiwani, Gupta studied in Pilani in Rajasthan.

He fought against social evils like dowry system, child marriage and started the tradition of community-marriages without dowry.

He was elected to Haryana Legislative Assembly on three occasions and served as chief minister of the state from December 1, 1975 to April 29, 1977 and then again for a brief period from May 23, 1990 to July 12, 1990.- PTI
