Nine injured as fishermen clash in mid-sea off Kunimedu coast

PUDUCHERRY: Nine fishermen were injured and a boat was damaged in a clash between two groups of fishermen in mid-sea off Kunimedu coast on Thursday.

According to the Kalapet police, the fishermen involved in the tussle belonged to Kalapet in Puducherry and Kunimedu in Villupuram district. They suffered minor bruises.

The clash broke out when the fishermen from Kalapatkuppam were fishing off Kunimedu.

An altercation between the two groups over the area of fishing ended up in the clash. In the melee, a boat belonging to the fishermen from Kunimedu got damaged, the police said.

As the fishermen in the damaged boat were trying to shift to other boats, the Kalapet men towed it back to their settlement.

The boat was given back to the fishermen of Kunimedu shortly after a meeting called by the “fishermen panchayat” at Kalapet, police added.
