An octogenarian reminisces

P. Samuel Jonathan

TUMULURU (GUNTUR): For a serene village, surrounded by verdant paddy fields and the quiet flowing Krishna Western Delta canal, Tumuluru in Kollipara mandal is now a beehive of activity.

The whole village is getting a facelift, thanks to the visit of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on September 1. Retired teacher N. Nazar, a An octogenarian, is excited about the visit of a leader from the Nehru family.

Born in a village that had a tryst with freedom struggle, he was witness to many movements and struggles in the village. As a teenager, he still remembers and cherishes the role of powerful personalities like Avuthu Subba Reddy, who played a key role in the Quit India movement.

“I still remember the day in 1942 during the heydays of freedom struggle, when two truck loads of sepoys stormed the village, searching for Reddy.

That was after the sensational gutting of the railway station in Tenali,” he reminisces. Mr. Nazar also remembers seeing Mahatma Gandhi at Tenali railway station and Jawaharlal Nehru at Tumuluru.
