BANGALORE: The Government has decided to come out with a new textile policy soon to provide the much-needed thrust to the textile and apparel industry in the State. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Minister for Textiles Appu Pattanashetty said the policy would encourage private sector participation in the sector. About Rs. 100 crore would be invested each year in the next five years to generate jobs in the industry. A consultancy firm had been given the task of preparing the policy and it would submit the same to the Government within two weeks, he said. The Government had also decided to establish textile and apparel parks in various districts. Parks would come up in Anekal, Kanakapura, Belgaum, Ramanagara, Gulbarga Mysore and Bellary in the next two years. The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) had already started acquiring land for the parks and the acquisition process would be completed in the next few months, Mr. Pattanashetty said. The establishment of textile parks would attract huge investments in the sector apart from reducing manufacturing cost. Focus
While the park in Belgaum would focus on powerlooms, the park in Bellary would promote denim-based garments. The Minister hoped that the State would emerge as a major apparel-sourcing destination with doubling of the exports. Karnataka’s export stood at Rs. 6,600 crore a year.
