Distribution of family cards begins in Tuticorin district

Tuticorin: Minister P. Geetha Jeevan inaugurated the distribution of a set of new family cards (ration cards) at a function held at the Municipal office here on Thursday.
Official sources said that a total of 3,500 new family cards would be distributed in the district over the next few days. Of this, 2,046 would be given away in Tuticorin taluk alone.
The cards will be valid till 2009.
With the distribution of this set of cards, the total number of family card holders in the district would rise to 4,63,383.
“Presently, there are no applications for procurement of new ration cards pending in the district,” sources said.
S.R. Sudharshan, District Supply and Consumer Protection Officer, said that the department had strengthened its drive against bogus family cards in circulation.
“We have devised an action plan to eliminate the bogus cards within 60 days,” he added.
A team comprising staff from Revenue, Co-operation and Civil Supplies departments have been engaged to trace the bogus cards.
The Municipal Chairperson, R Kasturi Thangam, and the senior town planning officer of Tuticorin Municipality, Rakkappan, were present.
