TIRUNELVELI: Banks in the district, which had originally planned to disburse a loan of Rs.955 crore during the year 2006–07 for agriculture, industries and services sectors, have surpassed their credit plan target for the year by registering a whopping figure of 151 per cent.

This information was tabled at the 131st District Consultative Committee meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday, with the Collector and chairman of DCC, G. Prakash in the chair.

According to the Annual Credit Plan 2006–07, it was decided to give Rs.691 crore (72.36 per cent of the total outlay) to agriculture sector, Rs.84 crore (8.79 per cent) to industries sector and Rs.180 crore (18.85 per cent) to services sector. The total outlay was to be shared by commercial banks (Rs.598.70 crore), regional rural banks (Rs. 190.96 crore), cooperative banks (Rs.158.46 crore) and other financial institutions (Rs.6.88 crore).

However, banks and other financial institutions surpassed the target in all the three sectors by giving Rs.942 crore to agriculture, Rs.97 crore for industrial and Rs.406 crore for services sectors, taking the total credit disbursed during the previous fiscal to Rs.1,445 crore.

Another encouraging aspect is that the Credit Deposit Ratio, an indicator of credit absorption and development of the district, stood at 84 per cent as on last June 30, an increase of 12 per cent over the last year’s performance. The 260-odd bank branches across the district had Rs.3,296 crore under their loan portfolio while the quantum of deposits stood at Rs.3,946 crore.

The 2,43,751 women enrolled in 15,157 self-help groups have saved Rs.58.53 crore so far. Under the SGSY scheme, 162 women self-help groups have been given financial assistance to the tune of Rs.514 crore, while 854 SHGs have received Rs.4.12 crore as revolving fund. The PMRY scheme has ensured a credit flow of Rs.3.74 crore for establishing their business ventures. A total of 110 projects were started in rural Tirunelveli under the KVIC – Rural Employment Generation Programme on an outlay of Rs.80 lakh.

Appreciating the banks for their cooperation, the Collector released the Annual Credit Plan booklet for 2007 – 2008.
