Emphasis laid on green energy

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The potential for National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi to function as a Centre of Excellence for wind power energy generation was deliberated upon on Tuesday at the inaugural of a workshop on ‘Recent Trends in Wind Power Generation and FACTS (Flexible Alternate Current Transmission Systems).

Addressing a gathering of teachers, research scholars and M.Tech students, Rajiv Kumar Varma, Associate Professor, University of Western Ontario, Canada, said that in the event of NIT-T, by virtue of its central location in the State, tapping the opportunities to provide technology leadership by tying up with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Wind Power companies towards establishing a Centre of Excellence, the Institute could leverage the benefits of the Indo-Canadian agreement on green energy generation.

India not only ranked fourth in the world in wind energy generation but also in the forefront in technical expertise, he said, adding that the next generation of manpower for wind energy, the veritable goldmine, would emerge in India, Mr. Varma said.

Emphasising on the vital importance of green energy against the backdrop of energy crisis and environmental degradation, the workshop coordinator and Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering C. Nagamani said renewable energy was the safe bet. India generates 6,000 MW wind power, accounting for one-tenth of its energy needs, and Tamil Nadu ranks top in the country by generating 3,100 MW wind energy.

Faculties in the department have been undertaking research in wind / solar power generation for long, and a good group of research scholars were working in this area, Ms. Nagamani said.

“Onus on teachers”

Inaugurating the workshop, Institute Director M. Chidambaram said the onus was on teachers to keep improving the knowledge base of students.

Mr. Chidambaram advised teachers and students to devote time for learning new technologies, constantly question the existing methods, and improve upon them.

He observed that the workshop would be of use for the participating teachers to offer the subject as an elective in their respective institutions and to undertake projects.

Professors N. Ammasaigounden and N. Kumaresan, addressed the gathering.

The workshop was organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
