Congress seeks seer’s support
Staff Correspondent
TUMKUR: A group of Congress leaders from Tumkur district called on Nanjhavadhoota Swamiji of Sri Sphatikapuri Kshetra near Sira on Thursday and sought his participation in the party’s campaign for the supply of Bhadra waters to the three most backward taluks of the district — Pavagada, Sira and Madhugiri.
C.R. Umesh, president of the party’s Sira Taluk Block Committee, who led the group, told presspersons that the swamiji had on several occasions in the recent past expressed his interest in fighting for the river waters for the benefit of farmers in the region.
Mr. Umesh said that the swamiji was popular among the people living in the areas along the State’s border with Andhra Pradesh and his leadership for the fight for the river waters would help build pressure on the Government to concede the demand.
He said: “Every political party is equally interested in securing the river waters for drinking and irrigation.”
On the status of the Upper Bhadra Project (which envisages supplying water to the arid region of the district), Mr. Umesh said the H.D. Kumaraswamy Government had been announcing that the project had been cleared for implementation. Mr. Umesh said there were no signs of work getting started. The swamiji assured them of considering the proposal, he said.
