Andhra University sets up distance education centre

The Bangalore centre is the second in the country


Bangalore: Andhra University has set up a distance education centre in Bangalore city, its second in the country.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, L. Venu Gopal Reddy, vice-chancellor, Andhra University, said the university had entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Centre for Advanced Technology Studies and the International Resource Development Centre.

“The School of Distance Education, Andhra University, offers a course for executives, MCA, BBM, BCA and other programmes. We now want to target students in Bangalore and provide them access to quality higher education at an affordable cost,” he said.

Dr. Reddy said that the university has also entered into an alliance with IRDC.

“This association will enable exchange of research projects. IRDC draws support from industry across the country to facilitate research projects, internships, academic support, advanced training and placement assistance to students of University Science Instrumentation Centre, Andhra University,” he said.

He said that the university has many other projects in the anvil. Talks with various foreign universities were on. “We want to introduce more programmes. The university is considering and working towards introducing double degree and joint degree programmes,” he said.

Dr. Reddy said that this year, the university would offer only MBA and MCA programmes. “The other programmes, including undergraduate, post-graduate, diploma, post-graduate diploma, certificate and professional courses, will be introduced in phases from the next academic year,” he said.

On the centre in Bangalore, he said that the city has a large talent pool. “There is a requirement for quality higher education. We wanted to tap the talent in the city,” he said.

The distance education programme is web-enabled. Students can download classes from the Internet. The study material would be provided to the students on a compact disc. Another unique feature is that students can contact the helpline and get their doubts cleared, he added.

Applications for the programmes will be issued through September. “Soon after, we will announce the date for the entrance examination. The programmes will start in November.”
