Work on two flyovers stopped

Raviprasad Kamila

MANGALORE: Work on two flyovers taken up by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as part of the project to convert National Highways 48, 13 and 17 into four lanes has come to a standstill.

The NHAI has taken up work on five flyovers in all.

Work on the Maroli flyover near Kulashekara and B.C. Road flyover has been stopped, while work at Kottara Chowki, Surathkal and Kuntikana is going on.

Sources in the NHAI attribute the reason for stopping work on Maroli flyover to the delay on the part of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) Limited to submit a revised estimate to shift a 33 kV underground live power cable to a length of 150 metres.

Work on B.C. Road flyover has been stopped because the Bantwal Town Panchayat has given a fresh proposal to the NHAI to lay a new water supply line.

The Bantwal Town Panchayat authorities have said that the NHAI has to give Rs. 33 lakh. But the NHAI has said that a proposal should be submitted through Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB). The NHAI has not yet received this proposal officially.

NHAI sources said that MESCOM has given a proposal to NHAI to shift the power line from Nanthoor to Kulashekara at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.45 crore. This proposal is awaiting NHAI clearance at Delhi.

At the same time, the NHAI wanted to take up the Maroli flyover work. As the location of this flyover is between Nanthoor and Kulashekara, the NHAI has to shift an underground live power cable to a length of 150 metres. Initially MESCOM gave an estimate for Rs. 1 lakh to shift the cable.

Following this, the NHAI paid Rs. 8,800 to MESCOM as supervisory charge. When a contractor of NHAI started work to shift the cable, MESCOM authorities did not permit it saying that they have to submit a fresh proposal. MESCOM has not submitted this fresh proposal to shift the cable, said sources in the NHAI.
