MOSCOW: Russia has accused Georgia of staging a “deliberate provocation” by claiming that a Russian plane bombed its territory earlier this month. A team of Russian military experts, which probed Georgia’s claims, told a news conference in Moscow that Georgian evidence of the incident had been fabricated. Georgia said a Russian Su-24 jet had entered the country’s airspace and dropped a missile on August 6. The missile failed to explode and did not cause any casualties. Tbilisi accused Russia of “undisguised aggression” and called for international investigation into the incident but rejected Moscow’s request to join the probe. Moscow said Tbilisi had organised the provocation to press its demand for replacing Russian peace-keepers in Georgia’s breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with a NATO force.
