Madhesi stir called off

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has signed a 22-point agreement with the Madhesi People’s Right Forum (MPRF), the organisation that has been leading the Terai agitation for the past few months. The development has provided a boost to the Constituent Assembly elections scheduled for November 22.

Following the deal, the MPRF has withdrawn its protest programme and said it would now focus on the upcoming Constituent Assembly polls.“We have called off the agitation and are gearing up for the Constituent Assembly elections from today itself,” MPRF chairman Upendra Yadav told reporters after signing the agreement.

The MPRF has given up its demand for the proportional system of election and has agreed to go for a mixed system. The MPRF has also achieved a major concession from the Government as the latter has agreed to form a high-level commission to look into the issue of restructuring the Nepali state with an aim to achieve federalism.
