COLOMBO: The former Prime Minister and United National Party (UNP) leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, had a 45-minute meeting with the former President, Chandrika Kumaratunge, at the latter’s official residence on Wednesday. The meeting assumes importance in the wake of an alliance forged by dissident Sri Lanka Freedom Party leader Mangala Samaraweera and the UNP to oppose what they term as “policies inimical to interests of Sri Lanka” pursued by the Government. The objective of the “National Congress” is to bring together likeminded political forces to “relieve” people from the “wrong policies and misgovernance” of the government. They see the policies and programmes of the present regimeas a sure recipe for disaster and deem it their “national duty” to rescue the “beleaguered island nation”.
