KOCHI: After years of waiting, the High Altitude Training Centre in Munnar could have its first batch of athletes by the end of this year. “The first phase work at the Munnar centre will be completed in a couple of months. Completing the unfinished projects will be the Sports Council’s top priority,” said T.P. Dasan, the Kerala State Sports Council President, on the sidelines of the sports seminar organised by the KSSC and the Regional Sports Centre at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here on Thursday. The track, ground and hostel building will be completed under the first phase. Similarly, the half-finished swimming pool at Pirappangode in Thiruvananthapuram will also be completed by December, said Mr. Dasan. Mr. Dasan also outlined the various schemes the council was planning to implement in the near future, including a State-level policy to make sport as part of the curriculum in schools and changes in the sports hostel system. Mr. Dasan inaugurated the seminar and the Ernakulam District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish delivered the presidential address. G. Kishore, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Kerala and Secretary KSSC, presented the theme paper on ‘infrastructure development of sports in Kerala.’ Sports stars Wilson Cherian, Shiny Wilson, M.D. Valsamma, Mercy Kuttan and Kerala Football Association President K.M.I. Mather were among those who spoke at the seminar. — Principal Correspondent
