Monisha Vinayak enters last eight

MANGALORE: Monisha Vinayak led the surge of seeded players in the u-19 girls’ section into the quarterfinals on the opening day of the Dix Shipping State badminton championship here on Thursday.

Top seed Monisha hardly broke a sweat in disposing off Sadana Karanth 21-7, 21-9 to enter the last eight. She was joined by Jacqueline R. Kunnath, Adsa Taqui, V. Ruth Misha, G.M. Nischitha and Ashwini Ponnappa.

Vikramanka, G.M Yogesh, K. Ananth, K.K. Shankar, Yateendra Deshpande, Aditya, Ganesh Mallya and G. Ganesh entered the main draw in the men’s section coming through qualifying rounds.

The results:

Girls U-19 (pre-quarterfinals): Monisha Vinayak bt Sadana Karanth 21-7, 21-9; Jacqueline R. Kunnath bt Anshika Sinha 21-3, 21-4; Adsa Taqui bt Sneha S. Rao 21-17, 21-14; V. Syble elected

Syble Lydia D’ Cunha and Vasantha Lakshmi, secretary and treasurer respectively of South Karnataka District Chess Association (SKDCA) have been unanimously elected to the executive committee of United Karnataka Chess Association (UKCA), Bangalore, at its state executive committee meeting at Shimoga recently.

St. Joseph’s advances

At Mysore, helped by two goals by right-out K.U. Bopaiah and a goal each by A. Gibran, C. Savan and S. Shanib, St. Joseph’s Central School (Mysore) registered a 5-0 win over Hardwicke High School and entered the semifinals in the district-level schools under-16 football tournament on Wednesday.

The results:

Under-16: Quarterfinals: St. Joseph’s Central School, Mysore bt Hardwicke High School 5-0; Marimallappa’s High School bt DMS High School 5-4 (via tie-breaker).

Under-14 : Semifinals: Mahabodhi School bt St. Joseph’s School 6-0; Quarter-finals: DMS bt Amrutha Vidyalaya 1-0; St. Joseph’s Central bt St. Mathia’s HPS 5-0; St. Joseph’s (State) bt De Paul International 1-0.

Shreyas triumphs

Shreyas Kulkarni and N. Aishwarya both of Star TT (Bangalore) clinched the mini-cadet boys’ and mini-cadet girls’ singles titles respectively on the opening day of the State-ranking junior table tennis tournament at Nanjangud on Thursday.

The results:

Mini-cadet boys’ singles (Final): Shreyas Kulkarni (Star TT) bt Shoalin V. Murthy (Horizon TT) 11-9, 11-6, 11-6.

Semifinals: Shreyas bt K. Rishab (Star TT) 11-7, 11-7, 11-2; Shoalin bt R. Samartha (Horizon TT) 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6.

Mini-cadet girls’ singles (Final): N. Aishwarya (Star TT) bt S. Anjana (Star TT) 11-5, 11-5, 11-2.

Awardees announced

At Bangalore, the following are the Ekalavya Awardees for 2005 and 2006.

The awards carry a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a memento and a citation. L. Lingappa, the athletics coach will receive a life-time achievement award ( Rs 1 lakh and a shawl).
