Mysore: Girish Arun Kosuhik, the current under-10 World chess champion, added one more feather to his cap, when he won the silver medal in the Asian under-10 chess championships at Al-Ain in UAE. Top-seeded in the tournament, 10-year old Girish, a fifth standard student of St. Thomas School, Vishveshwarnagar, Mysore tied with the eventual champion and third-seeded Pune-based Gagare Shardul (India) and Le Huu Thai of Vietnam by securing seven (tie-break score of 34) points from nine rounds, but Shardul’s better tie-break score of 40 to Girish’s 36 enabled the former to clinch the title. In the final round, Girish registered a win over UAE’s Sultan Ibrahim. Speaking to The Hindu, his father Arun Koushik said, “he and his family members were happy that his son has won a silver although he was a little bit disappointed that Girish could not win the title.” Girish is the firs t Karnataka player to earn the FIDE Masters Norm (FM Masters).
