Mumbai: Dilip Vengsarkar, chairman of the National selection committee, stepped out of the Cricket Centre, BCCI on Wednesday afternoon and announced that he was giving another chance to Akash Chopra with intentions of reviving his fading international career. Vengsarkar is clearly looking for a steady and stoical opener to face the new ball in the home series against Pakistan and for the tour of Australia. “I want to have another look at him. He’s another opening option. He’s not been picked for what he’s done in league cricket in England, but for his performances in the domestic competition,” said Vengsarkar, who had only Venkatapathy Raju as a selection committee colleague to pick the 14 member India ‘A’ team for the two four-day games to be played against South Africa ‘A’ at Delhi (Sept. 13-16) and Dharamshala (Sept. 19-23).
Mohammad Kaif has been retained as captain. Out of action for a long time, Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary and Uttar Pradesh’s Suresh Raina have also been included in the 14. The team: Mohd. Kaif (captain), Akash Chopra, Cheteshwar Pujara, Manoj Tiwary, S. Badrinath, Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel, Ishant Sharma, Yomahesh, Pankaj Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Arjun Yadav, Ahraf Makda, Amit Mishra. Coach:< /em> Chandrakant Pandit — Special Correspondent
