Helping weavers market their products

Staff Reporter

A web portal on the handloom textile industry has been launched

The website will connect weavers to intermediate buyers

It also aims at eliminating middlemen

BANGALORE: Few fabrics in the world can beat those that our weavers produce on their handlooms. Weaving is often a secondary occupation along with agriculture. However, often the weavers do not know to market their ware properly. To bridge the gap between weaver artisans, wholesalers, master weavers, retailers and importers/exporters and also link them, a web portal on the handloom textile industry has been launched.

Dedicated to support and encourage weaver artisans, the portal will provide necessary back-up in areas such as latest trends, colours, fashion, branding, documentation and logistics.

This will help in improving the Indian handloom industry, D.G. Ladha, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the new www.handlooms.com told reporters on Monday.

According to Mr. Ladha, weavers in the country are facing a lot of hardship because the traditional handloom segment is almost saturated.

He said that the industry is highly unorganised in vital issues such as fashion designing, international trends, selected colours, selection of yarns, patent registration and customisation.

The web portal has been launched realising the tremendous growth potential in this industry. “We intend to form a group of people concerned for the welfare of the industry,” he said.

The portal will connect weavers to all intermediate buyers and suppliers of different raw material, machinery, dyes and chemical suppliers.

It also aims at eliminating middlemen and bring down production costs, he added.
