MCD leader calls on Reddy

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, J. K. Sharma, called on Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy on Thursday and requested him to take measures to regularise the Capital’s unauthorised colonies.

Accompanied by several Congress councillors and senior leaders, Mr. Sharma said: “The residents of unauthorised colonies are mostly from the economically weaker sections of society. They have set up their businesses and trade in the area and will face life-threatening circumstances if they are forcibly displaced.”

“A regularisation policy similar to the one adopted by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970 should be enforced,” he said.

Mr. Reddy reportedly assured the Congress leader that the Central Government would pass a special Bill during the current session of Parliament for preventing further sealing operations in the Capital.
