NEW DELHI: Mayor Arti Mehra conducted a surprise inspection of some areas in the City Zone on Thursday. She was accompanied by the Engineer-in-Chief and the Deputy Commissioner (City Zone).
Making a note of the sanitation problems, the Mayor noticed a large quantity of “malba” dumped along Jawaharlal Nehru Marg near Lok Nayak JP Hospital.
“I have been told that this is an official ‘malba’ dumping site. It is a matter of great concern because thousands of people use this road and this gives the locality a shabby look,” she said, adding that an alternative site for dumping would be arranged soon.
The Mayor also inspected four “dhalaos” – garbage dumps -- of which three were found to be in a neglected state. “The dhalaos were in a bad shape and it appeared that garbage was not lifted for the past three days. Due to this, garbage was littered on the road outside the dhalao.”
The Mayor asked the Commissioner to take action against the contractor concerned with running the “dhalao” and to impose a fine on the local officer.
The inspection also revealed the presence of an unauthorised parking lot at Shastri Park. The road adjacent to the parking lot was also occupied by parked vehicles blocking the traffic.
‘File FIR’
The Mayor ordered the Deputy Commissioner concerned to file a First Information Report and spoke to the local Station House Officer asking him to take “strict action” against the contractor.
Ms. Mehra also proposed decentralisation of the process of awarding tenders for parking sites. “Decentralising the parking system will help us in generating more revenue. It will also restrict parking mafias who are illegally earning a lot of money through such parking lots.”
