THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The stage is set for the fifth annual water sports festival and pageantry on the Karamana river on Saturday, an event that seeks to spread the message that rivers are the lifelines of the land. The pageantry, which will cover six km on the river, will be led by actor Dileep. It will be flagged off by Minister for Law M. Vijayakumar at 2 p.m. Various Government departments, public sector units and private organisations will also participate in the event, being organised by the Jalotsava Samithi. A flotilla of 30 boats sporting various themes such as folk arts, music troupes, fibre boats and seagoing vessels are slated to take part in the pageantry. Security for the event will be provided by the police, Navy, Central Reserve Police Force and the Fire and Rescue Services. Pannian Ravindran, MP; Mayor C. Jayan Babu; MLAs N. Sakthan, V. Sivankutty and K. Ganeshkumar; the former Union Minister O. Rajagopal; District Congress Committee president V.S. Sivakumar; and Communist Party of India(Marxist) district committee president Pirappancode Murali will participate in the inaugural function. Deputy Leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan is scheduled to greet the flotilla when it reaches Thiruvallam at about 6 p.m. He will also inaugurate the valedictory function. An organising committee comprising 101 members and 20 regional committees has been constituted for the programme. Arrangements have been made to accommodate the tens of thousands of spectators expected to throng both banks of the river from Karamana to Thiruvallam. The best float in the pageantry will be presented with the Ananthapuri ever-rolling trophy instituted by the City Corporation. Trophies for the winners of the arts and sports contests will also be given away at the valedictory function. The function will be followed by a music performance by the ‘Singing Birds’ orchestra.
