Some plead for allowing a re-nomination
NEW DELHI: A day after the nomination papers of some star candidates of different parties for the Delhi University Students’ Union polls were rejected after a fresh scrutiny by the authorities, some student organisations on Thursday announced a new panel, while others have pleaded for allowing a re-nomination. Even as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad contemplated moving the Supreme Court and organising agitations over the issue of rejection of three of its candidates after the High Court ordered fresh scrutiny on Wednesday, it introduced its new panel on Thursday. The new candidates are Abhishek Tandon (president), Renu (secretary) and Manvender Singh (joint secretary). Sumanlata Dagar was the original choice for the post of vice-president. “It is a democratic process and we have to contest the elections. We do not contest elections based on muscle and money power. Our work speaks for itself,” claimed ABVP spokesperson Nakul Bharadwaj. Petition filed
The Students’ Federation of India, whose presidential and vice-presidential candidates Natasha Narwal and Pankaj Sarma respectively were rejected, will file a petition in the court on Friday. It has also submitted a letter to the Grievance Redress Cell – headed by Dean of Students’ Welfare S. K. Vij -- asking for “natural justice”. “The model code of conduct announced earlier did not mention anything on attendance. If the University has decided to change the rules midway, at least they should give us a chance to file fresh nominations. Though we have written to the Cell, but as of now, we are campaigning with our two candidates only,” said SFI Delhi State secretary Albeena Shakeel. The Youth for Equality that lost Shashank Shekhar (president) and Nisha Tomar (secretary) launched an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday against the new list and prohibition on re-nomination of candidates. Meanwhile, the Indian National Students’ Organisation’s has roped in independent candidate Mohammed Akhtar Ali to fight for the post of president.
