SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Five persons accused of causing death (culpable homicide) of a Muthusamiapuram resident near Dhalavaipuram were sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment, on Thursday.
According to the prosecution, one Chidambaram (50) was assaulted after he put up a hoarding demanding the police to take action against drug pedlars. The next day, August 24, 2004, six persons beat him up. Two days later, he died at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The police had registered a case against Ganesan, Selvam, Marudhamalai, Muthuramalingam, Lakshmanan and Marimuthu for murder.
However, when the case came up for hearing, the District Principal and Sessions Judge, V. Balasundrakumar, acquitting the last accused and convicted the remaining five for culpable homicide.
