VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit has called upon the youths in rural areas and on hilly terrains to form self-help groups to improve their economic conditions. Mr. Navnit made this observation at the Mass Contact Programme held at Pacheri on the Kalrayan Hills panchayat union near here on Wednesday.
Mr. Navnit said the panchayats should implement total sanitation programme by urging all households to set up individual toilets. The paddy farmers should go in for quality seeds to ensure good crops and less water consumption. The Collector said that sugarcane growers should adopt the drip irrigation system to maximise water utility, and also avail of the 50 per cent subsidy offered by the Government.
He noted that Grievance Day sessions were now spread out to panchayats, and this arrangement had helped the local people to submit petitions to local officials.
In the past fortnight, 4,500 petitions were received by the 10-member committees consisting of the village administrative officers, village assistants and extension officers. These petitions would be sent to respective departments for remedial measures. As far as Pacheri was concerned, the officials had collected 316 petitions, and took action on 296 petitions.
Mr. Navnit said a resident of Thumbai in the panchayat was given an assistance of Rs.12,500 from the Social Security Scheme to meet the funeral expenses of his mother.
He disbursed aid worth over Rs.5.21 lakh to 202 beneficiaries. Kallakurichi RDO L. Govindan, Kalrayan Hills panchayat union chairman C. Sankaran, Sankarapuram panchayat union chairman N. Chandrasekar participated.
