HONOUR: A Second World War veteran being honoured at a function organised by the Puducherry Ex-Services League in Puducherry on Wednesday.

PUDUCHERRY: The Second World War veterans in the Union Territory will get a lifetime assistance of Rs.1,800 every six months from the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League, according to Major General (retired) Bikram Singh Kanwar, president of Indian Ex-Services League.

A lifetime grant of Rs.300 a month was distributed to 14 war veterans at a function held here on Wednesday by the Pondicherry Ex-Services League (PESL) to mark the diamond jubilee of the country’s Independence.

Speaking at the function, Mr. Kanwar said all war veterans and their widows, registered with the PESL, would be given the grant. There were about 25 war veterans and 40 widows of the war veterans residing in the Union Territory, he added.

Apart from the assistance given by the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League to war veterans, the IESL would also extend a medical grant of Rs.10,000 depending on merit of the claim, he said.

Explaining the welfare measures undertaken, he said the organisation provided education stipend to the children of ex-servicemen and life-time scholarship to the kids of widows.

The quantum of stipend depended on the number of candidates in each territory, he said.

Mr. Kanwar urged the ex-servicemen to stand united in their fight for the cause of social welfare. He honoured 12 war heroes. As many as 200 umbrellas were distributed to the ex-servicemen and widows of ex-servicemen.

The 197th executive committee meeting was held after the function. As many as 23 delegates representing different States participated. Lieutenant General (retired). K. Chatterjee, patron of IESL and executive committee members Colonel N.L. Varma and Colonel H.M. Hameed also took part.
