“Instead of creating a satellite town spanning over thousands of acres”
CHENNAI: The State Government should go in for the establishment of smaller localities in and around Chennai, instead of attempting to create a satellite town spanning over thousands of acres, the Pattali Makkal Katchi said on Thursday.
There were enough lands close to the city. Several individuals had grabbed lands on either side of East Coast Road and Old Mamallapuram Road between Chennai and Mamallapuram. Besides, some persons had purchased lands, from 10 to 100 acres. Instead of farm lands, the Government should acquire such lands. Such a move would ease the problem of congestion in Chennai. This resolution was adopted at the executive meeting of the party at Thailapuram, near Tindivanam. S. Ramadoss, founder, and G.K. Mani, president, were among those who attended the meeting.
Recalling the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s assurances in the Assembly last year on the issue of satellite town, the resolution urged him to honour it.
Welcoming the Government’s move on hoardings, the PMK asked the Government to take steps for removal of several objectionable hoardings in interior parts of the State. On special economic zones, it mentioned that a Parliamentary committee headed by the former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi had advised the Central and State Governments to reconsider the SEZ scheme. Industry should not be promoted at the cost of agriculture.
The report of the Muthukumaran committee on the common school system should be published immediately.s
