Debate likely on September 10, 11
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: A parliamentary debate on the nuclear deal with the United States is tentatively fixed for September 10 and 11.
The debate will take place in the Lok Sabha on September 10 and in the Upper House the next day.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said this on Thursday after meetings of the Business Advisory Committees (BAC) attached to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The decision was taken even as an agreement was hammered out between the UPA and the Left on setting up a mechanism to consider the Left parties’ concerns on the deal.
When Mr. Dasmunsi was told that the Bharatiya Janata Party had rejected the mechanism, which, it said, should have included representatives of other political parties, Mr. Dasmunsi asserted that the UPA-Left committee was “not a parliamentary or a government committee.” Had it been a parliamentary or government committee the BJP would have been justified in demanding participation. The mechanism was to discuss and iron out differences between the UPA and its supporting Left parties. The BJP’s objection was that the nuclear deal was not a “family matter” of the UPA and the Left.
The Minister said a majority of leaders in the BAC wanted September 3 declared a no-session day and the Speaker had agreed to that. September 4 was a holiday on account of Janmashthami.
