M.L. Naidu next Army Vice-Chief

NEW DELHI: The Army has announced some high-level appointments including that of the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff, a post that will fall vacant with the promotion of current incumbent Deepak Kapoor as the Chief of the Army Staff.

He will be succeeded on October 1 by Lt. Gen. Milan Lalitkumar Naidu, now the commander of the Army’s Shimla-based Training Command, said official sources here.

Commissioned in the Rajput Regiment in December 1967, Lt. Gen. Naidu has served in all sectors and terrain in India. While commanding 5 Rajput, he participated in the Sri Lanka operations where he was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal.

He has commanded a brigade in semi-desert terrain, a division in Punjab during the military standoff with Pakistan and a corps in a glaciated area. He was also the Defence Attaché in Germany.

Other appointments

The other senior-level appointments are concerned with new chiefs of the Western and Southern Commands, besides the successor to Lt. Gen. M.L. Naidu in the Training Command.

Lt. Gen. T.K. Sapru, now 16 Corps Commander in J&K, will be the next Western Army Commander. He takes over from Lt. Gen. Daljeet Singh who is retiring on October 31.

Lt. Gen. N. Thamburaj, now 11 Corps Commander in Punjab, will be the next chief of the Southern Command. He takes over from Lt. Gen. Aditya Singh retiring on September 30. Lt. Gen. J.K. Mohanty, Commandant of the Army War College, is to be the next Army Commander of Training Command. He replaces Lt. Gen. Naidu.
