CHENNAI: Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) XI and Mumbai qualified for the final of the all-India Buchi Babu invitation tournament here on Thursday. In day-three semifinal action, AIS defeated Combined Districts at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium by 166 runs, while Mumbai went past Baroda at ICL-Gurunanak by virtue of the first innings lead. Resuming on 109 for three, AIS declared its second innings on 157 for five from 20.3 overs. Medium-fast bowler A. Avinash, who had taken three wickets on Wednesday, added two to his tally to finish with all five AIS wickets to fall. But, he conceded 80 runs in his 10.3 overs — an indication of intent from AIS’s batsmen. Brendan Drew top-scored with 79 off 63 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. Set 355 from 45 overs for victory, Districts ended on 188 for nine. K.B. Arun Karthik made 42, while number-six batsman S. Suresh Kumar was unbeaten on 48. The wickets were shared around. In the other semifinal, Avishkar Salvi, who played four ODIs for India in 2003, registered figures of five for 36 at ICL-Gurunanak to help dismiss Baroda for 212. Miten Shah top-scored with 47. Mumbai made 188 for seven in 45 overs in its second innings, Prashant Naik scoring 57, but there wasn’t time enough to complete Baroda’s second innings. Mumbai will take on AIS XI in the final at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium from Saturday. The scores: At MAC: AIS 363 for eight and 157 for five decl. in 20.3 overs (Brendan Drew 79, A. Avinash five for 80) bt Combined Districts 166 and 188 for nine in 45 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 42, S. Suresh Kumar 48 n.o.). At ICL Gurunanak: Mumbai 340 for nine and 182 for seven in 45 overs (Prashant Naik 57) bt Baroda 212 in 74.3 overs (Miten Shah 47, Avishkar Salvi five for 36) and 29 for three in 12 overs, by virtue of the first innings lead.
