Georgiou, Zhang move into final

Avinash Nair

VASCO: Giant killer Michael Georgiou of Engaland marched into the final of the Vascon Manisha IBSF World under-21 snooker championship with a convincing 8-5 win over fancied Vincent Muldoon of Ireland.

In the best of 15 semifinal here on Thursday evening at the Bogmallo beach resort, Michael trailed 3-4 at the end of the first session but reeled off four frames in a row on resumption.

Though Vincent did manage to pull things back in the 12th there was no stopping Michael from coasting home.

Michael will clash with China’s Anda Zhang in the final.

Zhang scored a hard fought 8-6 win over Welshman Daniel Wells. Zhang ran up a 5-2 lead at the break and soon after made it 6-2 with a century to boot. But then on it was Wells’ resilience and recovery that came to the fore as the Welshman clawed his way to make it 6-7 when Zhang missed a sitting black after break of 57.

However, he made amends with a clearance for a 100-9 finish.

The 15-year-old Zhang had two century breaks of 109 and 108 in the fifth and eighth frames, but more importantly, his positioning and potting was a treat to watch.

Hoo’s run ends

Moh Keen Hoo of Malaysia’s run came to an end on Thursday as Anda Zhang of China scored a comfortable 6-1 win to reach the semifinals.

It was just not Moh Keen’s day. Nothing went right for him from the moment he entered the hall.

Moh produced breaks at ease, capitalising on his opponent’s poor play to run up a 4-0 lead, with two breaks of 69 (first and second frames) and a 45 in the fourth. The first session went 4-1 in Zhang’s favour.

Zhang wrapped up the match in quick time winning the next two frames as well.

Unseeded Michael Georgiou of England, who came from the verge of exit to win his round of 32 match, has since been on a roll.

On Thursday morning, Michael demolished China’s Yu Delu 6-1 with a flourish.
