For September 5 local body bypolls in Virudhunagar district
VIRUDHUNAGAR: A total of 546 candidates are in the fray for the September 5 by-elections to fill up 215 vacancies in various local bodies in the State. Representatives to 270 out of 485 seats have been elected unopposed.
Reviewing the arrangements for the by-poll to be held in the district, the State Election Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, said on Friday that electronic voting machines would be used in urban local bodies for the first time in the State. Two hundred EVMs had been procured at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh which would be used in 145 urban local body seats, he added.
The SEC had been taking efforts to introduce EVMs for elections to rural local bodies in phases and had recommended to the State Government to effect suitable amendments to election rules to make use of EVMs, he said.
The Commissioner asked the election officials to conduct the by-polls in a proper and fair manner to avoid legal cases.
In Virudhunagar district, election will be held to Ward 42 of Rajapalayam municipality, post of president of Melachinnaiyapuram panchayat in Virudhunagar panchayat union and six vacancies in different panchayats.
The District Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, the Additional Superintendent of Police, Rajendran, Assistant Director (Panchayat), Selvaraj, and Assistant Director (Town Pachayat), Chandrasekar, participated in the meeting.
