I am not given due respect by officials, says Marimuthu Water has become a scarce commodity in the ward I represent
ERODE: “No development works have been carried out in my ward, though I am vice-chairman of the municipality. No official is respecting me., I am not even provided proper seats when I visit officials along with people in my ward to represent their cases,, said the Dharapuram Municipality vice-chairman, Marimuthu (DMK), at the Dharapuram Municipal council meeting held here on Monday, presided over by the chairman, Subramaniam (PMK). Though he was given a seat near the chairman, Mr. Marimuthu chose to sit along with other councillors during the meeting. For the last eight months, no new development works were undertaken in the ward, he said. Water has become a scarce commodity, though there was heavy flow of water in River Amaravathy. Neither the officials nor the chairman was taking any initiative to sanction works for his ward, he added. Hence he will not occupy a seat at the podium. Shafiullah (DMK) said though River Amaravathy was in spate for the last one month, the municipality was not providing water properly to the residents. Chairman Subramaniam said that water could not be pumped because of the failure of the foot valve. A new valve would be fitted soon, he added. Srinivasan (DMK) said that the foot valve was purchased six months back. Why it was not fitted till date? he asked. Engineering Department officials said that the vave purchased had to be replaced hence was the delay. Mr. Subramaniam admitted that water scarcity prevailed in his ward also. DMK councillors said that the because of the lethargic attitude of municipal officials, people were suffering. It was the duty of the chairman to take remedial measures. Later, not satisfied with the reply, DMK councillors squatted on the floor of the council. Kamaraj and Govindaraj (AIADMK) said that all these problems were arising out of the misunderstandings between the PMK and the DMK,. Denying the charge the chairman said that a committee would be formed soon to monitor the works of the municipality. Then the DMK councillors occupied their seats.
