Haveri flood report by September 3

HAVERI: The officials of the Haveri district have been given time till September 3 to complete the survey of the flood-affected villages and submit their report to the district administration.

Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner B.B. Devoor informed the general body meeting of the Haveri Zilla Panchayat here on Friday that the survey was almost complete and wherever there was delay, the officials would be given strict instructions to complete it in time.

He said several teams had been formed for the purpose and a common format for collecting information had also been prepared, which would make it easier for fixing compensation afterwards.

Giving details to the meeting in the absence of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Devoor clarified that there was no dearth of funds for flood relief works and the district administration had Rs. 63 lakh for the purpose. An amount of Rs. 43 lakh, meant for taking up other works, could also be utilised for the relief works along with another Rs. 21 lakh, meant for road repair and other projects, he explained.

He said the relatives of the nine persons who lost their lives during the flash floods and heavy downpour in the district had been given a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh each. Another person was reportedly killed during the floods and the veracity of the same was being looked into, he said.

The issue of supply of low quality foodgrain to government hostels in the district created furore in the meeting, with several members cutting across the party lines venting their ire against the officials.

The meeting decided to make it mandatory for the District Social Welfare Officer to inspect the quality of the foodgrain before ordering their supply.

Complaints about low quality organic fertiliser being supplied to farmers through “Raita Sampark Kendras” led to commotion in the meeting as some members alleged that ash mixed with soil was being passed on as organic manure.

Intervening in the discussion, the Joint Director of Agriculture clarified that the department had only taken steps to ensure smooth distribution of the manure through the kendras and the decision on purchase of the manure was taken at Bangalore.

Following complaints about inviting tenders for projects undertaken by various departments without bringing the same to the notice of the president and vice-president of zilla panchayat, Chief Executive Officer K.S. Aralikatti directed the officials to send a copy of the tender notification to the president and the vice- president.

Zilla panchayat president Honnavva Rahutanakatti and vice-president N.C. Patil were present.
