Belgaum: Kannada organisations in Belgaum district are “angry” with the State Government for “ignoring them” with regard to the installation of a statue of Rani Chennamma on the Parliament complex premises in New Delhi. The Centre organised a function to install the statue of the queen in New Delhi on August 8. According to Belgaum District Kannada Organisations’ Action Committee president Ashok Chandargi, all Kannada organisations and people of Kittur and Belgaum had been seeking installation of Rani Chennamma’s statue on the Parliament complex premises for the past 25 years. They had also been demanding that Kittur be developed as a tourist spot. Though the decision of the Centre to install the queen’s statue on the Parliament complex premises was welcome, the State Government did not bother to invite any Kannada organisation to the function, he said. Hurt
Stating that they were hurt by such “indifferent attitude” of the State Government, he said that it may not be of much importance to others, but it was a matter of pride for the people of Belgaum district to see that the statue being installed on the Parliament complex.
