Victims of Kuwait war may get more concessions

Special Correspondent

Claimants told to contact branches of SyndicateBank

200 people from Goa receive compensation

PANAJI: Goa Commissioner of NRIs Affairs Eduardo Faleiro said on Friday that because of his efforts, 200 Goans, victims of the Kuwait war, had received compensation ranging from Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh from the United Nations Claims Commission (UNCC).

“They would have otherwise forfeited these amounts as their addresses were not known,” said the former External Affairs Minister.

The commission had decided to obtain further concessions for these persons with the help of the Special Kuwait Cell in the Ministry of External Affairs. The Special Kuwait Cell had forwarded to the commission names of 75 claimants whose money was at present with the SyndicateBank’s branches in Goa, he said.

Mr. Faleiro said that these claimants should contact the nearest SyndicateBank’s branch and claim the money by producing their original passport and a copy of the status letter from the Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) or of the bank.

Mr. Faleiro said that the UNCC had provided a time-limit of six months for disbursement of claims.

However, in some cases, in the event of the of the beneficiary, the kin were to be brought on record and they would be deprived of the compensation if the time-limit was not extended, he said.

In other cases, banks had claimed that some beneficiaries had been overpaid and started recovery proceedings.
