NOVEL PROTEST: Residents transplanting padding saplings in the slush formed due to spill-over of sewerage in Karuvadikuppam on the outskirts of Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: A ride on the Lawspet Main Road, especially between the stretch from Karuvadikuppam to the Vivekananda School, has become an unforgettable event for many road-users.

Apart from the bumpy ride, one might end up with smudged cloths, and if one is not careful, can end up in a hospital bed. The reason, the entire stretch does not have a proper drainage and sewerage water spills over the entire road.

If the road-users complain of bumpy ride and clothes getting grimy, the local residents say their houses get drenched with drainage water.

The locals say that they had taken up the issue several times with the administration but to no avail. However, the Local Administration Department officials say they have started laying the drainage pipes in the region. The stretch will be taken up very soon. The officials say that they are waiting for the Public Works Department to complete the relaying of the road near Karuvadikkuppam for laying sewerage pipes.

The residents want the administration to speed up the work so that it can be completed before the rain season. “In the last year spell, during October-November, most of the houses were filled with sewerage water. It took us days to drain the house and the premises,” says a resident.

‘What will happen?’

They point out that some of the houses got filled with slush in the recent spell. “If an intermittent shower could create so much of inconvenience, what will happen when it really rains hard,” asks another resident.
